Atoms

science

TermDefinition
Atoms smallest unit of matter
Democritus first to present the idea that all matter is made of atoms
John Dalton made the first modern atomic model
Atomic Model all matter is made of atoms, atoms cannot be divided, each element has its own unique atom, and atoms will combine in whole number ratios to form compounds.
JJ Thomson made the plum pudding model
Plum Pudding Model atoms are filled with positively charged fluid and stationary electrons are suspended in fluid
Ernest Rutherford made the planetary model
planetary model nucleus of the atom is a dense mass of positively charged particles and electrons orbit the nucleus
Niels Bohr made the rutherford-bohr model
Rutherford-Bohr model electrons orbit the nucleus in orbits that have a set size and energy and lower energy levels filled first
Erwin Schrodinger made the cloud model
the cloud model electrons do no travel in an exact orbit and we can predict where it will probably be based on energy levels and orbitals
What makes up an atom? protons, neutrons, electrons
mole the unit meaning that you have 6.02x10^23 (Avogadro's number)
Molar mass a value showing the mass of 1 mole of a compound(grams)
1 mole=Avogadro's number =molar mass
formula for moles n=m/M
formula for particles n*6.02E23
Energy levels rings around the nucleus where the electrons can be found
how many energy levels? 7
Orbitals specific paths of travel for a pair of electrons that make up an energy level
4 types of orbitals s, p, d, f
1st energy level
Energy level diagrams a diagram showing the placement of protons electrons, and neutrons of an element

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
