Writing Vocabulary

| cite | to "quote" a source and/or give credit to a source |
| textual evidence | a piece of information from a text that we use to support our ideas, beliefs, opinions, and arguments |
| quote | to repeat or copy a group of words from a text or speech |
| hook | the first sentence in an essay that attempts to grab the reader's attention, also called grabber |
| thesis | one sentence that expresses the main idea of an explanatory essay; usually at the end of the introduction paragraph |
| topic sentence | first sentence of a paragraph that introduces the main idea of the paragraph |
| supporting sentences | sentences that support, explain, illustrate, or provide evidence for the idea expressed in the topic sentence |
| body of essay | paragraphs that come after introduction paragraph that support the thesis of the essay |
| conclusion | last paragraph of essay that summarizes the main points in the paper (may include a reflection) |
| restate | to say in a different way |
| transition word | a word or phrase that connect ideas or signal a shift in different parts of an essay |
| reflection | a statement in which a writer reflects or "looks back" at ideas expressed in an essay and connects them to personal experience |
| analyze | to closely study a text to determine why the author made certain choices |
| explanatory essay | an essay in which a writer explains or describes a certain event, situation, or topic (includes introduction, body and conclusion paragraphs) |
| narrative | a story involving events, characters, and what the characters say and do |
| author's purpose | the motive or reason for which an author writes, as to entertain, inform, or persuade |
| edit | to make changes that correct or improve |
| main idea | the author's message about the topic |
| audience | the reader(s) for which a piece of writing is intended |
| summarize | brief retelling; includes only the main idea and the most important key ideas and details. |
| introduction | first paragraph of an essay that includes the hook, brief introduction of main points and thesis |
