Academic Vocabulary

protagonist the main character in a fictional text
character trait attitudes, behaviors, and beliefs that contribute to a fictional character's personality
characterization he process by which the writer reveals the personality of a character
exposition the background information on the characters, setting and conflict explained at the beginning of the story
text any form of written or printed work
rising action series of events in a plot in which the tension builds leading to the climax
climax highest point of tension in a plot or turning point for the main character
falling action the sequence of events that follow the climax and end in the resolution
resolution the end of the story in which the main conflict is resolved
conflict the central struggle between characters or opposing forces
internal conflict a conflict in which a character struggles with their own opposing desires, beliefs or feelings
external conflict a struggle that takes place between a character and an outside force such as another character or nature.
theme a universal idea, lesson, or message throughout a work of literature
literature a body of written work
point of view the perspective from which a writer tells a story; the voice that tells the story (ex. First Person)
narrator the voice that tells the story
flashback a scene in a novel in which the narrator interrupts the plot to take the reader back in time to reveal an event from the past
first person point of view the narrator is a person in the story, telling the story from their own point of view (I, me, my)
third person point of view the narrator is a "voice" outside the story, telling the story from outside the story (he, she, they)
antagonist a character or force who opposes the main character
dynamic character a character who changes or learns a lesson throughout the course of a story
reading stamina the ability to focus and read independently for long periods of time without being distracted or without distracting others
plot the sequence of events in a story in which each event results from a previous one and causes the next (includes exposition, rising action, climax, falling action and resolution)
fiction writing that tells about imaginary characters and events
nonfiction writing that is based on facts, real events, and real people, such as biography or history
genre A type of literature (e.g., fiction, drama, poetry, fantasy, biography,...)
