Parts of the Brain

Parts of the brain

TermDefinition
Amygdala processes emotions, especially fear coordinates physiological responses based off cognitive information from areas of the cortex (higher cognitive info) and the brain stem systems (lower metabolic responses)
Basal Ganglia movement regulation - initiation of movements, balance, eye movement, posture skill learning, habit formation, reward system
Brain Stem maintains homeostasis in the body by controlling autonomic functions (Ex. blood pressure, breathing, digestion, heart rate, perspiration, temperature), alertness, sleep, balance, startle response
Broca's Area language production (speech and signs) comprehension of complex syntax
Broca's aphasia inability to express language, halting speech repetitive speech, disordered syntax and grammar and disordered structure of individual words
Cerebullum 10% of brain coordination of voluntary movement, motor-learning, balance, reflex memory, posture, timing, sequence learning
Corpus Callosum connects and allows information to pass between right and left hemispheres
split brain syndrome left and right hemispheres cannot communicate subtle cognitive, movement, and perceptual difficulties
frontal lobe executive processes (decision making, planning, problem solving, thinking), voluntary motor movement, cognition, intelligence, attention, language processing, comprehension
Hippocampus early memory stage, spatial navigation, formation of long term president
Hypothalamus regulates autonomic functions (Ex, hunger, thirst, body temperature, perspiration, blood pressure, heart rate, shivering, pupil dialation, circadium rhythm, sleep)
Limbic System memory formation and storage, regulating emotion, processing smells, sexual arousal
occipital lobe vision
synthesia blended senses Ex. graphme color- letters and numbers are perceived to have specific colors
Parietal Lobe takes information from different senses to create one picture - perception and integration of somatosensory information (touch, pressure, pain, temperature), visual spatial processing, spatial attention, spatial mapping, number representation
prefrontal cortex executive processes (decision making, planning, problem solving, thinking) attention inhibition intelligence social skills
Temporal Lobes face/object recognition, perception, understanding language, learning and memory acquisition, emotional reactions, processes hearing
thalamus relays connection between cortex and brain stem (motor and sensory info), alertness, perception and cognition, attention, timing, memory, movement, consciousness
Wernicke's Area language comprehension in the left hemisphere of the brain
Wernicke's Aphasia inappropriate words and inability to understand spoken language trouble with synchronizing objects and ideas to words that signify them

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
