Foundation to Ethnic Studies

| Critical Theory | a philosophy that involves being critical of the prevailing view of society |
| Race | Refers to physical differences that groups and cultures consider socially significant |
| Ethnicity | Refers to shared culture, such as language, ancestry, practices, and beliefs |
| Nationality | Refers to the country of citizenship |
| Class | a group of people within a society who possess the same socioeconomic status (power, status and wealth) |
| Privilege | a special right, advantage, or immunity granted or available only to a particular person or group. |
| Marginalization | treated like “less than” or ignored; to relegate to an unimportant or powerless position within a society or group |
| Hegemony | the power one social group wields among the rest. |
