Matter L3 Overall Assessment Questions

QuestionAnswer
matter that has a constant chemical composition and characteristics Substance
on a scale that people can see with their eyes Macroscopic
the amount of matter in an object or sample; mass is measured in kilograms Mass
a characteristic of matter Property
a property that describes the mass of a certain volume of matter Density
a property that describes how well one substance dissolves in another substance Solubility
a property that describes a substance's ability to burn Flammability
Mass, color and odor can all be used to describe an object's .... physical properties
Yes or no, a substances properties change if the size or shape changes no, properties stay the same regardless of sample size
How can you identify a substance? Properties such as shape, color, solubility, melting/boiling point
What does macroscopic mean? It's big enough for you to see with just your eyes.
Substances have many properties like odor, density, and solubility. How is this useful? We can use these properties to identify substances.
How do you calculate density? Mass/Volume (mass divided by volume)
Things that have a density less than water will... Float
What is solubility? How well something dissolves.
If I keep adding salt to a glass of water, what will eventually happen? The salt will dissolve for a while, but then it will stop. Add more water to dissolve more salt.
TRUE or FALSE: Different substances have different Melting and Boiling Points. T or F TRUE, each substance is unique, scientists keep charts for all substances to use as a resource.
What do a silver ring, a silver coin, and a silver nugget have in common? Density, Solubility, and melting/boiling points of them will be identical.
Why did the liquid in the bottles in our classroom stay in layers? The liquids were not soluble in each other
Substances with particles packed close together with have a.... higher density
