Action - Regulates severe fluctuations of the manic phase of bipolar disorder - Diminishes frequency / intensity of hyperactive episodes
Use BIPOLAR
ADRs - **Toxicity - **Dehydration is a major concern (esp. when used with diuretics) - Rarely used for mood stabilizer
Contraindications - Allergic to yellow food dye (tartrazine) - Renal / cardiovascular disease - Sodium depletion - Profuse sweating - Diarrhea / vomiting - Fluid loss
Interactions - Diuretics - Antipsychotics ^^Both of these increase risk of lithium toxicity
Medication Administration Rapidly absorbed after oral administration
Nursing Interventions Blood levels checked (concern if greater than 1.5me/L)
