levadopa (Larodopa) | AntiParkinsons; Prototype; PO; dopaminergic drug; most effective drug for Parkinsons; don't give iron with it. ADVERSE: anorexia, nausea, hypotension, cardiac arrhythmias. CNS stimulat--restlessness, agitation, confusion, deliurium. |
carbidopa (Lodosyn) | PO; decreases peripheral breakdown of levodopa so given w/levodopa. |
apomorphine ( Apokyn) | injection, dosing pen. For Parkinsons during episodes of hypomobility (unable to perform ADLs) |
Tolcapone (Tasmar) | PO, for Parkinsons, ADVERSE: liver damage and deaths from liver failure; can cause dark urine and other symptoms of liver failure; anorexia, abdominal tenderness, jaundice, clay-colored stools. |
ropinirole (Mirapex) | PO, dopamine agonist; beg/advanced Parkinsons, also RLS, restless leg syndrome. |
Diphenhydramine (Benadryl) | PO, IV, deep IM; anticholinergic drug (acts on CNS) Parkinsons |
trihexyphenidyl (Trihexy) | PO, PO elixir, anticholinergic drug Parkinsons, antihistamines and TCAs increase effects. |
halothane (Fluothane) | General Anesthetic, volatile liquid, depresses respiration; May cause cardiac dysrrhythmias; isoflurane and/or sevoflurane are better and safer. |

chlordiazepoxide (Librium) | Benzodiazepine; PO,IM,IV; C-IV; used in acute alcohol withdrawal (DTs); short 1/2 life; doesn't stay in body long. |
midazolam (Versed) | Benzodiazepine; Anxiety/Insomnia. IM and IV; C-IV; BLACK BOX warning for respiratory arrest. |
chloral hydrate (Somnote) | Anx/Insom; PO, supp., C-IV; oldest sedative-hypnotic; safe, effective, inexpensive; DOESN'T take away REM sleep. Can cause tolerance in as little as 2 weeks. High abuse potential (red gel cap). 1960s people stole chloral hydrate; put in colas Mickey Finn |
eszopiclone (Sonata) | for RX of Insomnia in patients who have trouble falling asleep; PO. |
hydroxyine (Vistaril) | PO, deep IM; avoid IV, SC, intra-arterial. antihistimine with sedative and antiemetic props;anxiety, pruritis. Used mainly in pre-op ON BOARD crash cart; GOOD DRUG. old but still used. |
zaleplon (Sonata) | PO, C-IV; short-term treatment of insomnia; hypnotic; HAS lots of ADVERSE effects--depression; drowsiness; nausea, dizziness, etc. BEFORE Ambien. |
