Naloxone (Narcan)

| Use | - Post op. acute respiratory depression - Opioid adverse effects (reversal) - Suspected acute opioid overdosage - Treat clients addicted to opiates |
| Complications | - Nausea / vomiting - Sweating - Tachycardia - Increase BP - Tremors |
| Medication Administration | - Assess BP, Pulse, RR - Monitor vitals every 5 to 15 minutes |
| Contraindications | - Pregnancy / lactation - Infants of opioid-dependent mothers - Clients with opioid dependency or cardiovascular disease |
| Interactions | - Withdrawal - May prevent intended use of opioid antidiarrheals, antitussives, and analgesics |
| Nursing Interventions | - Monitor RR, Rhythm, Depth, Pulse, BP, LOC until effects of opioid have worn off - Repeat dose of naloxone if needed |
| Evaluation of Medication Effectiveness | - Opioid has worn off, client is stable |
| Client Education | - Nurse administers if needed |
