Non-Salicylates

Acetaminophen

TermDefinition
Action Analgesic (reduce pain + inhibit prostaglandin synthesis), antipyretic (reduce fever)
Use - Treat mild to moderate pain - Reduce temperature - For those with an aspirin allergy, bleeding disorders, or receiving anticoagulant therapy - After minor recent surgery
ADRs - Skin eruptions, urticaria (rash) - hemolytic anemia - Pancytopenia (decrease blood cell count) - Hypoglycemia - Jaundice, hepatotoxicity, hepatic fever
Medication Administration Toxicity can occur after a single dose and can be fatal at 20 25g Max Dose is 4g and 3250mg for adolescents
Contraindications/Precautions - Habitual alcohol use - Pregnancy category / lactation - Severe pain + recurrent high fever - Taken with OTC cold medicine
Nursing Interventions Observe for poisoning, educated patient how to take it
Interactions Loop diuretics (normally control fluid imbalance) but when taken with non-salicylates can decrease effectiveness of diuretic
Client Education Avoid alcohol
Medication Effectiveness Is the pain gone?
