Non-Salicylates
Acetaminophen

| Action | Analgesic (reduce pain + inhibit prostaglandin synthesis), antipyretic (reduce fever) |
| Use | - Treat mild to moderate pain - Reduce temperature - For those with an aspirin allergy, bleeding disorders, or receiving anticoagulant therapy - After minor recent surgery |
| ADRs | - Skin eruptions, urticaria (rash) - hemolytic anemia - Pancytopenia (decrease blood cell count) - Hypoglycemia - Jaundice, hepatotoxicity, hepatic fever |
| Medication Administration | Toxicity can occur after a single dose and can be fatal at 20 25g Max Dose is 4g and 3250mg for adolescents |
| Contraindications/Precautions | - Habitual alcohol use - Pregnancy category / lactation - Severe pain + recurrent high fever - Taken with OTC cold medicine |
| Nursing Interventions | Observe for poisoning, educated patient how to take it |
| Interactions | Loop diuretics (normally control fluid imbalance) but when taken with non-salicylates can decrease effectiveness of diuretic |
