Literary Terms

TermDefinition
Protagonist The main character of the story. The character with the major conflict. Usually the good guy.
Antagonist The cause of the conflict for the protagonist. Usually the bad guy.
Primary/Main Character The protagonist and antagonist
Secondary Character Help move the plot along May be positive or negative May have their own conflicts-not main conflict.
Exposition Lets us know what is going on; who, what, when, where.
Rising Action Explains the conflict.
Climax Situation is at its worst; the most intense emotion in the story.
Falling Action Characters are working towards solving the conflicts.
Resolution Conflicts are resolved either positively or negatively.
Mood The feeling the scene gives the reader.
Theme The insight into life communicated through the story, or the point of the story. *Should be a statement.*
Character vs. Self When a character has an inner conflict such as a difficult decision of choice.
Character vs. Character One character in conflict with one character.
Character vs. Society One character or group of characters are in conflict with a larger group of characters A conflict is based on social, economic, or political problems
Character vs. Nature Character is threatened by something in nature: weather, disease, age, poisonous plants.
First Person Point of View Told by a character in the story. Uses I, me, my & mine to tell the story
Third Person Point of View The story is told by a narrator who is not a character. Uses he, she, they, them
Flat Character Undergoes No change of attitude/thinking throughout the story.
Round Character Changes the way they think, act or feel in regards to a main conflict from the beginning of a story.
Flashback Part of the plot that is out of order; it gives important information for the story.
Foreshadowing A hint early in the story to what is going to happen later.
