Vocabulary from Ch. 4: Work and Energy

| work | the use of force to move an object some distance. |
| joule | the Newton-meter, or the standard unit used to measure work. |
| potential energy | stored energy, or the energy an object has due to its position or its shape. |
| kinetic energy | the energy of motion. |
| mechanical energy | the energy possessed by an object due to its motion or position, or the object's combined potential and kinetic energy. |
| law of conservation of energy | says that no matter how energy is transferred or transformed, all of the energy is still present somewhere in some form or another. |
| power | the rate at which you do work. |
| watt | the unit of measurement for power. |
| horsepower | a measurement of power based on how much work a horse can do in one minute. |
