Energy & Circuits
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Energy | what is needed to do work or cause a change |
Mechanical energy | all the energy something has due to its movement and position |
Kinetic energy | the energy of motion |
Potential energy | the energy that is stored in an object |
Sound energy | a form of energy produced by vibrating objects |
Light energy | energy that allows us to see |
Thermal energy | the energy of moving particles in a substance |
Electrical energy | energy resulting from the flow of electrical charge through a conductor |
Circuit | the pathway through which electricity flows |
Electric current | a constant flow of electrons through a conductor |
Flow | to move or travel smoothly in a certain direction |
Open/incomplete circuit | electrons do not have a path to flow through; light bulb will not light |
Closed/complete circuit | electrons have a complete path to flow through; light bulb will light |
Conductor | materials that allow electricity to move through them easily |
Insulator | materials that resist the flow of electricity |
Load | any component of a circuit that consumes power or energy |
