What is the definition of 'weather'? The state of the atmosphere at any particular time and place.
What is the study of weather called? Meteorology.
What are some elements of weather? Temperature Atmospheric pressure Relative humidity Wind speed and direction Precipitation Sunshine
What do occupations such as farming, fishing, tourism, air traffic and sport have in common? They require very accurate weather forecasts.
Who is the leading provider of weather information and related services for Ireland? Met Eireann.
What is a thermometer used for in relation to weather? To measure the degree of hotness or coldness of the atmosphere.
Name the lines that join places of equal temperature? Isotherms.
How do you calculate the mean/average temperature for a the year? Sum of monthly temperatures divided by number of months.
How do you calculate the temperature range? Maximum temperature minus minimum temperature.
What is atmospheric pressure? The weight of the atmosphere as it presses down on earth.
What instrument is used to measure atmospheric pressure? Barometer. A barograph is a barometer that is connected to a chart to record the atmospheric pressure.
What is millibars/hectopascals? The unit of measurement for atmospheric presssure.
What is relative humidity? The amount of water vapour in the air compared to the amount it would contain if it were saturated.
Why do we measure relative humidity? The amount of water vapour in the air can influence precipitation and temperature.
What instrument is used to measure relative humidity? Hygrometer. The most common type uses wet and dry bulb thermometers.
What instrument is used to measure wind speed/direction? Anemometer. The direction of the wind is indicated by a wind vane.
What is the Beaufort Scale? It's used to estimate wind speed by describing the wind's effects on the landscape. The scale ranges from 0 to 12.
What is the name given to moisture that results from the condensation of water vapour in the atmosphere and returns to Earth? Precipitation.
What instrument is used to measure precipitation? Rain gauge.
Why is sunshine measured? To indicate the amount of solar energy reaching Earth, as well as for areas such as tourism.
What instrument is used to measure sunshine? Campbell-Stokes sunshine recorder.
What does the term 'Isohels' mean? Lines that join places of equal sunshine shown on a weather chart.
