Properties of Matter
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Conductor/Conduct/Conductivity | a material that allows heat energy or electricity to pass through it easily |
| Dissolve | to spread out evenly in a liquid |
| Insulator | a material that does not let heat energy or electricity pass through it easily |
| Gas | a state of matter in which the substance takes both the shape and the volume of its container |
| Less dense | an object will float |
| Liquid | a state of matter in which the substance has a definite volume but takes the shape of its container |
| Mass | the amount of matter in an object or substance |
| Matter | anything that has mass and takes up space |
| Mixture | a combination of two or more substances that keep their own properties |
| More dense | an object will sink |
| Magnetism | Pushing or pulling force produced by a magnet |
| Physical State | the classification of matter as a solid, a liquid, a gas |
| Relative Density | comparing the density of one material to another, such as: iron is more dense than water ( comparing more dense or less dense) |
| Solid | a state of matter in which the substance has a definite shape and a definite volume |
| Solubility | a measure of how much of one substance will dissolve in another substance |
| Solution | a mixture with one substance spread out evenly in another substance; you cannot tell the two substances apart |
| Soluble | able to be dissolved, especially in water |
| Thermal energy | the energy of moving particles in a substance, also called heat energy |
| Volume | the amount of space that an object or substance takes up |
| Water Displacement | an object that sinks displaces an amount of fluid equal to the object's volume. We test this using a graduated cylinder. |
