ASHP American Society of Health-System Pharmacists Model Curriculum for Pharmacy Technician Education and Training | A program that provides details on howto meet the ASHP goals for pharmacy technician training curricula |
BOP Board of Pharmacy | A state-managed agency that licenses pharmacists and may either register or license pharmacy technicians to work in pharmacy |
CPhT Certified Pharmacy Technician | A technician who has passed the national certification examination ; the technician can use the abbreviation CPht after his or her name |
Closed Door Pharmacy | A pharmacy in which medications are called in from institutions , such as long-term care facilities , and are then delivered; closed-door pharmacies are not open to the public |
Communication | The ability to express oneself in such a way that one is readily and clearly understood |
Community Pharmacy | Also known as an outpatient or a retail pharmacy ; these pharmacies serve patients in their communities ; consumers can walk in and purchase a prescription or over-the-counter (OTC) drug |
Competency | The capability or proficiency to perform a function |
Confidentiality | The practice of keeping privileged customer information from being disclosed without the customers consent |
CE Continuing Education | Education beyond the basic technical education, usually required for license or certification renewal |
Hyperalimentation | Parenteral ( intravenous) nutrition for patients who are unstable to eat solids or liquids also know as total parenteral nutrition (TPN) |
Inpatient pharmacy | A pharmacy in a hospital or institutional setting |
Licensed Pharmacy Technician | A pharmacy technician who is licensed by the state board; licensing ensures that an individual has at least the minimum level of competency required by the profession, unlike a registered pharmacy technician |
NABP National Association of Boards of Pharmacy | National Organization for members of state boards of pharmacy |
NHA National Healthcareer Association | Certification Organizations for a variety of health care careers, including the institute for the certification of pharmacy technicians ( ICPT ) |

Nondiscretionary duties | tasks that do not require professional judgement such as repackaging medications , managing inventory, filling automated dispensing machines , and billing |

Parenteral Medications | A term most commonly used to describe medications administered by injection, such as intravenously , intramuscularly, or subcutaneously |

PTCB Pharmacy Technician Certification Board | National board for the certification of pharmacy technicians |

Registered Pharmacy Technician | a pharmacy technician who is registered through the state board of pharmacy ; the registration process helps maintain a list of those working in pharmacies and may require a background check through the legal system |
SEPhT The Society for the Education of Pharmacy Technicians | SEPhT is a national technician organization with free membership that offers tools and useful information used in training and education of students and current practicing pharmacy technicians |
TPN Total Parental Nutrition | Large - Volume intravenous nutrition administered through the central vein ( subclavian vein) which allows for a higher concentration of solutions |
