| Alliteration | Repetition of initial consonant sounds |
| Allusion | A reference to a different well-known text |
| End Rhyme | Rhyming words that occur at the end of two or more lines of poetry |
| Figurative Language | Any language goes beyond its literal meaning of words and is usually meant to create new effects |
| Free verse | Poetry that does not have a regular pattern of meter |
| Imagery | language that stimulates the reader's memory that appeals to one of the five senses |
| Internal rhyme | rhyme that occurs within a line |
| Metaphor | A comparison of two things without using like or as |
| Mood | How the piece of writing makes the reader feel |
| Onomatopoeia | A word that imitates the sound it represents. |
| Personification | giving inanimate objects or abstract concepts living or human qualities like qualities |
| Prose | writing organized into sentences and paragraphs that is not poetry |
| Rhyme | The use of words with similar vowel and consonant end sounds |
| Rhythm | The pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables in lines of verse. |
| Simile | A comparison of two unlike things using like or as |
| Stanza | A group of lines arranged together in a poem |
| Symbolism | an object or action in a literary work that means more than itself and stands for something beyond itself |
| Theme | the message or moral in a piece of written work |
| Tone | Attitude a writer takes toward the audience |
| Line | one line or words in a poem |
| Voice | The author’s presence in a piece of literature whether in first, second, or third person. |
