| Hyperbole | an extreme exaggeration in order to prove a point. |
| Connotation | The deeper or suggestion meaning of something. |
| Denotation | The literal definition of the word/phrase. |
| Oxymoron | when opposite ideas or words are connected to create new meaning |
| Allusion | a reference to an outside famous person or character |
| Theme | the main idea or underlying message of literary work |
| Pun | a play on words in order to create a comedic effect |
| Euphemism | The polite way of masking a rude statement or expression |
| Situational irony | the exact opposite of what is expected happens- a contradiction |
| Dramatic irony | the audience is aware of something that is going to happen, but the characters are not |
| Alliteration | the repetition of the same letter or sound at the beginning of words. |
| Imagery | descriptive writing that appeals to the sense |
| Metaphor | saying that one thing is another thing |
| Simile | comparing two things using like or as. |
| Mood | the feeling or atmosphere of a story or work |
| Tone | the attitude or mood that the narrator of a story seems to have. |
