Drug Indications

TermDefinition
Penicillin used for the treatment of a broad spectrum of bacterial microorganisms. Can be used as a prophylactic prior to and or during oral surgery or dental work
Cephalosporins used for the treatment of a broad spectrum of bacterial microorganisms. In addition, they can be used for oral surgery, neurosurgery, female reproductive system surgeries or procedures, orthopedic surgery, and heart procedures.
Fluoroquinolones used for the treatment of a broad spectrum of bacterial microorganisms. Specifically, they are used for urinary tract, upper respiratory tract, ophthalmic, and bone infections.
Macrolides are commonly used to treat pulmonary infections, chlamydia, and Haemophilus influenzae.
Sulfonamides used to treat urinary tract infections, E. coli, and upper respiratory infections.
Tetracyclines used to treat gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria, including rickettsia and chlamydia.
Histamine 1 blockers used for allergic reactions caused by histamine
NSAIDs reduce swelling and inflammation caused by irritants or injury.
Non-Benzodiazepines (Z-hypnotics) used to induce or maintain sleep or decrease anxiety.
antipsychotics used to control symptoms of psychosis and mood disorders.
Benzodiazepines used to treat anxiety and sleep disorders.
Tricyclic antidepressants used to treat unipolar depression and regulation of sleep patterns.
Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors used to treat major depressive disorders by blocking the reuptake of serotonin into the neuron.
Selective Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitors used to treat major depressive disorders by inhibiting the reuptake of both norepinephrine and serotonin into the neuron.
Beta-Blockers used mainly for hypertension, but are also used for other cardiac disease states such as cardiac arrhythmias (irregular heartbeat) and myocardial infarction (heart attack).
Angiotensin Converting Enzyme Inhibitors used to treat hypertension by inhibiting the conversion of angiotensin 1 into angiotensin 2, which causes vasoconstriction in the body.
Angiotensin 2 receptor blockers used to treat hypertension by blocking the effects of the angiotensin 2 at receptor sites, preventing vasoconstriction
HMG-CoA Reductase Inhibitors used to lower blood cholesterol.
Histamine 2 Receptor Antagonists or Blockers used to treat hypersecretory conditions which cause an excess of stomach acid by inhibiting the interaction of histamine at H2 receptor sites.
Proton Pump Inhibitors used to treat hypersecretory conditions which cause an excess of stomach acid by preventing the transport of hydrogen to the gastric system, which decreases the amount of stomach acid that can be produced.
Sulfonylureas used to treat type 2 diabetes, or non-insulin-dependent diabetes by stimulating the production of insulin in the beta cells of the pancreas.
Biguanides used to treat type 2 diabetes, or non- insulin-dependent diabetes by reducing hepatic glucose output and increase uptake of glucose.
