Essay Basics

TermDefinition
What is the definition of genre? A kind of writing that organizes literature into different categories
What is the definition of stance? The writer's attitude towards the subject
Transition words Words that guide the reader through the text
Tone The way the writer reads and reflects about the subject
Define what is a thesis? A topic/ main idea of a topic that they'll cover
Example of a good thesis An unproved statement assumed as a premise.
Example of a stance One's opinion or point of view
What is quoting? Using someone else's words
Define what paraphrasing means? Rewording someone else text
What is summarizing? To give a brief detail idea
Why is it important to summarize? It provides information without reading the text
Define evidence? To give details to support your answer
Signal phrase To include quoted, paraphrased or summarized material in a source
Example of signal phrase Acknowledges/acknowledged
Example of tone Modest, Frustrated, Forceful and Compassionate
Example of paraphrasing He needs to get rid of a lot of junk
What is the structure of an essay? Introduction, body and conclusion
What is the most used format of an essay? MLA style
What is citation? The act of giving information from a source
Why are citations important? To give proper credit to your sources
What is an example of a citation. (Field, 2007)
What 3 things are in good thesis? Topic indication, giving your options and supporting facts
