qualitative observation descriptions of observations that do NOT involve numbers or measurements
quantitative observation descriptions of observations the DO include numbers (measurements)
chemistry the study of the properties of matter and how matter changes
physics the study of matter and energy and how they interact
hypothesis a possible answer to a scientific question or explanation for a set of observations (educated guess)
dependent (responding) variable the variable that is expected to change because of the manipulated variable (it is measured)
scientific theory a well-tested explanation for experimental results (explains why it happens)
scientific law describes an observed pattern without explaining it (often based on a mathematical equation)
technology a way of changing the natural world to meet the human needs or solve problems
engineer a person who is trained to use both technology and scientific knowledge to solve practical problems
constraint any factor that limits or restricts a design
prototype a working model used to test a design
independent variable the variable that is tested by the scientist
