Unit 1: Matter Vocabulary and Definitions

attract move closer; pull; stick together
gas a state of matter that takes the shape of the container; can not feel it
magnet an object that attracts (pulls) iron; can push (repel) or pull (attract) other objects
liquid a state of matter that takes the shape of the container; can be poured; can be felt
mass the amount of matter (stuff) in something; how much an object weighs
magnetic an object attracted by a magnet
solid a state of matter that has a definite shape; keeps its own shape
matter anything that has mass and takes up space
magnetism an attracting or repelling force that causes a magnetic material to move; Does the object has iron in it?
physical properties characteristic that can be observed or measured; describe; tells about
repel move away; push back by force
States of matter the forms matter can take, such as solid, liquid, and gas
nonmagnetic not attracted to a magnet; does not have iron in an object
temperature a tool to measure how hot or cold something is; measured in Fahrenheit (F) and Celsius (C)
celcius an international unit of measurement for temperature
