Scientific Method Vocab

TermDefinition
explanation an interpretation of an observation that is based on prior knowledge
observation the information obtained by the use of one or more of the senses: sight, hearing, touch, smell, and sometimes taste to gather information and collect data.
collaboration communication with one another by discussing ideas, brainstorming, and deciding on an answer or a plan; working together
model a representation of an object or a system
theory a scientific explanation of known facts arrived at through repeated testing over times (tells WHY things work)
mode the most frequently occurring number in a set of numbers
physical science the study of matter and energy
precision the exactness of a measurement -- more sensitive tools will give more decimal places
controlled experiment tests only 1 factor at a time and consists of a control group and one or more experimental groups.
independent variable this is what the researcher changes on purpose to see how it will affect the experiment's outcome
dependent variable what is being measured at the end of an experiment
control the "normal" circumstance, or non-treated situation, in your experiment
hypothesis a testable idea or explanation that leads to an investigation
mean the average of a set of numbers
SI unit the international system of units (metric) units expressed in multiples of ten. Common Units meter, liter, gram (kilometer, decimeter, centimeter, etc. KHDBDCM)
median the middle of a set of ordered values
law a summary of many experimental results and observations. This tells you how things work and that you can expect the same thing every time
accuracy the correctness of the measurements (how close is measured value to true value?)
celsius SI unit of temp. Water freezes a 0 and boils at 100
kelvin SI unit of temp. Water freezes at 273 and boils at 373. O means no motion of molecules and has not been achieved
