What does the liver produce? The liver produces bile.
What is the most complicated organ in the digestive system? The liver.
What is bile? Bile is a mixture of chemicals that prepares fats for digestion.
Which organs are NOT a part of the digestive tract? The liver, pancreas, and the gall bladder are NOT parts of the digestive tract.
What is one thing that the liver does? The liver warms up the body's blood.
What length (in inches) is an adult human's pancreas It is roughly 5 inches long.
What are the 2 main functions of the pancreas? 1. it makes juices that are squirted into the small intestine 2. It produces a base called "sodium bicarbonate" which is better known as "baking soda".
Waste is expelled through what? The anus
Is the appendix useless? No, although scientists once thought it was.
What is the appendix useful for? It is useful for storing beneficial bacteria when a disease threatens to wipe them out. After the disease is over, they will "repopulate" the intestines once more.
What are the fat-soluble vitamins? Vitamins A, D, E, and K are all fat-soluble
Which vitamins (fat-soluble or water-soluble) are most likely to build up toxic levels in the body? Fat-soluble vitamins
What role do most vitamins play in the body? Vitamins regulate the chemical processes in the cells
Which 2 vitamins can the body absorb without eating food that contains those vitamins? Vitamins D and K
Is the inside wall of the small intestine smooth or rough? Smooth
Which 3 parts is the large intestine composed of? The cecum, the colon, and the rectum.
What is the main function of the stomach? To absorb water that is in the chyme
Are vitamins effective in large amounts? No, you should only consume vitamins in small portions.
Where does your saliva come from? Your salivary glands
Your tongue molds the food you eat into a soft lump called what? A bolus
The stomach lining makes what? Juices that help to digest the food that you eat.
Most people call these "gums", but what is the scientific name for these? The scientific name is "gingiva".
What is the inside wall of the small intestine covered with? Millions of projections called "villi".
The bacteria that live in your large intestine feed on what? They feed on the chyme as it travels through the large intestine
What do the beneficial bacteria that live in your large intestine produce? They produce chemicals like vitamins that are useful to your body
In the stomach, the bolus is mixed with a liquid called what? Gastric juice
Where the bolus is mixed with a liquid in the stomach, what is the most important chemical in that liquid? hydrochloric acid
