Mass Movement
GillExplore Geography - Cyclone Chapter 9
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Mass Movement | The movement of loose material down a slope under the influence of gravity. |
Regolith | Loose material made up of soil, rocks and mud. |
What are the factors that influence Mass Movement | Slope or Gradient, Vegetation, Water, Human Activity. |
Types of Mass Movement | Soil Creep, Mudflow, Landslide, Bog burst |
Soil Creep | The slowest mass movement and occurs on gentle slopes |
Mudflow | They occur when the soil and regolith become saturated with water, usually after heavy rainfall. This moves rapidly downslope with speeds up to 100 km per hour. |
Bog Burst | Areas after long periods of heavy rainfall peat can become saturated with water. Peat can then flow downslope and cause great damage over a large area. |
Landslide | A very rapid movement of regolith down a very steep slope. |
