Mass Movement

TermDefinition
Mass Movement The movement of loose material down a slope under the influence of gravity.
Regolith Loose material made up of soil, rocks and mud.
What are the factors that influence Mass Movement Slope or Gradient, Vegetation, Water, Human Activity.
Types of Mass Movement Soil Creep, Mudflow, Landslide, Bog burst
Soil Creep The slowest mass movement and occurs on gentle slopes
Mudflow They occur when the soil and regolith become saturated with water, usually after heavy rainfall. This moves rapidly downslope with speeds up to 100 km per hour.
Bog Burst Areas after long periods of heavy rainfall peat can become saturated with water. Peat can then flow downslope and cause great damage over a large area.
Landslide A very rapid movement of regolith down a very steep slope.
