Human Anatomy

TermDefinition
Stimuli A thing or event that evokes a specific functional reaction in an organ or tissue
Dendrites A short branched extension of a nerve cell, along which impulses received from other cells at synapses are transmitted to the cell body
Central Nervous System The complex of nerve tissues that controls the activities of the body. In vertebrates it comprises the brain and spinal cord.
Peripheral Nervous System The nervous system outside the brain and spinal cord
Endocrine Cell Produces and releases hormone molecules into the bloodstream.
Pituitary Gland The major endocrine gland, a pea-sized body attached to the base of the brain. This part controls the development and growth and the functioning of the endocrine glands.
Myocardium The muscular tissue of the heart.
Alveoli Many tiny air sacs of the lungs which allow for rapid gaseous exchange
Olfaction The sense of smell
Trachealis Muscle Thick band of smooth muscle that bridges the ends of each of the horseshoe-shaped cartilage rings that help to stabilize the entire length of the windpipe.
