Term | Definition |

Stimuli | A thing or event that evokes a specific functional reaction in an organ or tissue |
Dendrites | A short branched extension of a nerve cell, along which impulses received from other cells at synapses are transmitted to the cell body |
Central Nervous System | The complex of nerve tissues that controls the activities of the body. In vertebrates it comprises the brain and spinal cord. |
Peripheral Nervous System | The nervous system outside the brain and spinal cord |
Endocrine Cell | Produces and releases hormone molecules into the bloodstream. |
Pituitary Gland | The major endocrine gland, a pea-sized body attached to the base of the brain. This part controls the development and growth and the functioning of the endocrine glands. |
Myocardium | The muscular tissue of the heart. |
Alveoli | Many tiny air sacs of the lungs which allow for rapid gaseous exchange |
Olfaction | The sense of smell |
Trachealis Muscle | Thick band of smooth muscle that bridges the ends of each of the horseshoe-shaped cartilage rings that help to stabilize the entire length of the windpipe. |
