MLA Format

These cards teach about how to cite using MLA formatting.

TermDefinition
Elements of MLA in Order Author. Title of source. Title of container, Other contributors, Version, Number, Publisher, Publication date, Location.
Book citation- generic Author last name, Rest of author's name. Italicized title of book. Publisher, date.
Website citation- generic Author. "Name of Individual Webpage." Italicized name of parent website, url.
Journal citation- generic Author last name, Rest of author's name. "Name of Article in Quotation Marks." Name of Journal in italics, vol. #, no. #, year, pp. numbers.
Piece of music- generic Author last name, Rest of author's name if applicable. "Name of song in quotation marks." Name of album in italics, Publisher, year, url if online source.
Container Larger whole in which a source is located. Examples are the television series when citing a specific episode, the name of the journal when citing a specific article, the name of an album when citing a specific song.
Can Containers be within larger Containers? Yes, if so, cite them both. Put the larger container before the URL and italicize both.
Publisher questions If there are multiple publishers relevant to your research, cite both using "and" between them. You do not need to include publishers names when citing journals or when citing websites if the publisher is the same as the website name.
Online source questions Recommended that you include date of access at the end of the citation: Accessed 27 Jul. 2022. If your source has a DOI, use that instead of a URL.
Citing the Purdue OWL The first should be italicized: The Purdue OWL. Purdue U Writing Lab, 2022.
Citing individual resources in the Purdue OWL "MLA Formatting and Style Guide." italicized: The Purdue OWL, Purdue U Writing Lab. Accessed 27 Jul. 2022.

Version questions List the edited version in your citation if it is listed in your source. Italicized title. Edition of title, Publisher, date.
Teacher requirements Your teacher may have given different instructions, so follow those above these examples if the examples contradict the instructions.
Book with more than one author 2 authors: Last name, First name and 2nd Author name. 3 or more authors: Last name, First name, et al.
