Changes of State
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Change of State | process by which matter changes from one state to another |
| Thermal Energy | the total kinetic energy of all the particles in a substance |
| Melting point | temperature at which melting begins |
| Evaporation | change of state from a liquid to a gas |
| Water vapor | water in a gas state |
| Boiling | adding thermal energy to liquid water particles causing them to speed up enough, the particles change to the gas state, forming bubbles |
| Boiling point | temerature at which the substance begins to boil ( 100° C at sea level) |
| Condensation | process of a gas changing state to a liquid |
| Freeze | process in which a liquid changes to a solid |
| Freezing Point | temperature at which water freezes (same as its melting point) |
| Pressure | force created by the colisions of these particles with other materials |
| Physical Change | a type of change in which the form of matter is altered but one substance is not transformed into another. Examples: Crumpling a sheet or paper, breaking a pane of glass, or freezing water into ice are all physical changes. |
