Properties of Matter
| Term | Definition |

| Matter | anything that has mass and takes up space |
| Mass | a measure of the amount of matter in an object |
| Weight | how much matter is in an object |
| Volume | a measure of the amount of space an object takes up |
| Displacement | when an object enters water, it pushes out water to make room for itself. The object pushes out a volume of water that is equal to its own volume |
| Density | the ratio of the mass of a substance to its volume |
| Physical Property | a property that can be observed without changing the identity of the substance Examples: shape, color, size |
| Chemical Property | describes a substance's ability to change into a new substance with different properties, can be observed by trying to change the identity of substance in a chemical reaction |
| Thermal Conductivity | physical property that describes how quickly a substance warms or cools |
