Week 6 Sherpath

Week 6 Pharmacology Intravenous Therapy TIme and IV push medications

QuestionAnswer
A healthcare provider orders 1,000 mL of IVF to infuse at 125 mL/hr. This IVF will take _____ hours to infuse. (Use dimensional analysis method.) 1000 mL / 125 ml = 8 hours
A patient is receiving 750 mL of normal saline (NS). It is infusing at 15 gtt/min, and the administration set is 15 gtt/mL. The infusion time is hour(s). (Use dimensional analysis method.) 750 mL x 15 gtt = 11,250 / 60 min x 15 gtts = 900 so 11,250/900 = 12.5 hours
How many hours will it take to infuse 500 mL of NS, if the drop rate is 60 gtt/min and the drop factor is 20 gtt/mL? (Use dimensional analysis method.) 1 hr / 60 min x 1 min/60 gtt x 20 gtts/ 1mL = 10,000/3,600 = 2.77 hours or 2 hours and 46 minutes
Lactated Ringer (LR) is being infused at the infusion rate of 50 gtt/min and using a 15 gtt set over 3 hours. At the end of the period, ______ mL will be infused. (Use dimensional analysis method.) 1mL/15 gtts x 50 gtt/1 min x 60 min x 1 hr / 1 x 3 hr/1 =9,000/15 =600mL
A healthcare provider orders lorazepam 4 mg IVP over 10 minutes. The medication arrived from the pharmacy in a prefilled syringe labeled lorazepam 4 mg/5 mL. The nurse calculates the push dosage as mg/mL. 4mg / 5mL = 0.8 mg/mL
The prescriber orders 10 mg of hydralazine (Apresoline) by IV push. The medication is supplied as 20 mg/mL. The label says to dilute this medication with 5 mL of normal saline before giving it by IV push over 5 minutes. Therefore, the dosage to be adminis 10mg / 20 mg x 1mL = 0.5 mL then 0.5 mL +5 mL = 5.5 mL
The healthcare provider orders Lasix 40 mg via IVP. It is available in an ampule marked 40 mg/ 2 mL to be infused over 4 minutes. The patient will receive this medication at _____ mL/min. 2mL /4 min= 0.5 mL/min
10 mL of medication via IVP are to be administered over 5 minutes. If the IVP is started at precisely 0100 hours, the next calibration of the IV push will be at hours? 10mL / 5 min = 2mL/min Iv started at 0100 hours therefore, the next IV push would be at 0101 hours. Wait one minute inbetween.
There are 15 calibration marks on a 3 mL syringe. A medication requires that 3 mL be infused over 4 minutes. How many calibrations will the nurse infuse and at what intervals (in seconds)? total seconds/ total increments = seconds to deliver each increment 240/15 increments = 16 seconds per calibration
500 mL of D5W is to infuse at 100 mL/hr. The infusion will last hour(s). (Use dimensional analysis method.) 500 mL / 100 mL = 5 hours
A patient is receiving 250 mL of Lactated Ringer (LR) at a rate of 40 mL/hr. How long will this take to infuse? (Use dimensional analysis method.) 250 mL / 40 mL/hr = 6 hr 15 min
A healthcare provider orders 1,200 mL of D5W. It is infusing at 60 gtt/min, and the administration set is a microdrip. Therefore, the infusion time will be ______ hour(s). (Use dimensional analysis method.) 1200 mL / 60 gtt/ min = 20 hours
If the drop rate is 80 gtt/min and the drop factor is 10 gtt/mL, what is the infusion time for 1,500 mL of D40W? (Use dimensional analysis method.) 10 gtts x 1500 mL = 15,000 /80 gtts x 60 min =4, 800 so 15,000/4,800 mL = 3.125 hours or 3 hours 8 min
A patient is being infused with ½ NS at the infusion rate of 30 gtt/min, using a 15 gtt set over 2 hours. At the end of this period, the patient will receive ______ mL of ½ NS. (Use dimensional analysis method.) 30 gtt x 60 min x 2 hr = 3,600/15 gtt = 240mL
What is the infusion time for 350 mL of D5W, if the drop rate is 15 gtt/min and the drop factor is 10 gtt/mL? (Use dimensional analysis method.) 350 mL x 10 gtts / 15 gtt x 60 min = 3,500 / 900 = 3.88 hr = 3 hours 53 min
The healthcare provider dilutes morphine 2 mg so that the concentration is 2 mg/4 mL. The medication is to infuse over 2 minutes. Based on this, the patient will be administered mg/mL. 2 mg /4 mL =0.5 mg/mL
A healthcare provider ordered haloperidol 50 mg diluted in 20 mL NS as an IVP. Based on this, the patient will receive ___ mg/mL. 50 mg / 20 mL = 2.5 mg/mL
The healthcare provider dilutes morphine 2 mg so that the concentration is 2 mg/5 mL. The medication is to infuse over 2 minutes. The medication will be administered at a rate of mL/min. 5 mL / 2 min x 1 = 2.5 mL/min
There are 50 calibration marks on a 10 mL syringe. A patient is to receive 8 mL over 4 minutes. The nurse will infuse how many calibrations and at what intervals (in seconds)? 240 seconds /40 = 6 seconds (0.5 mL) 1 calibration every 6 seconds
Hydromorphone 2 mg per IVP comes in a single-use vial labeled 2 mg/mL. Nine milliliters of medication are added to the active ingredient prior to infusion. The patient will receive __ mg/mL. 2 mg / 10 mL = 0.2 mg/ mL
A high-potency medication of 50 mg of diphenhydramine via IVP STAT will be diluted to 50 mg/7 mL and infused over 10 minutes. Based on this, the patient will receive __ mL/min. 7mL /10 min x 1 min = 7/10 = 0.7 mL/min
An IVP of 8 mL is to be given over 5 minutes at 2 mg/mL. The nurse starts the IVP at 0800 with 8 mL. At 0801, 6.4 mL of the IVP remains and at 0802, 4.8 mL remains. At what time will 3.2 mL of the IVP remain? And, what amount of the IVP will remain at 080 8mL / 5 min x 1 = 1.6 mL Next medication delivery time is 0803
