Waves Test Vocab

Vocabulary Practice!

TermDefinition
Wave A disturbance that carries energy from one place to another
Medium/Matter Material that carries a wave (ex. solid, liquid, gas)
Compressional Wave/Longitudinal Wave Medium moves parallel to energy (ex. sound waves)
Mechanical Wave Waves that require a medium to travel through
Transverse Wave Medium moves perpendicular to energy (ex. light waves)
Crest High point of transverse wave
Trough Low point of transverse wave
Amplitude Height from line of rest to either crest or trough
Rest Imaginary line that indicates where a transverse wave would be at rest.
Compression High density area of a compressional wave. Wave is bundled close together.
Rarefaction Low density area of a compressional wave. Wave is spread apart
Wavelength The distance on one part of the wave to another part. (ex. crest to crest, compression to compression)
Electromagnetic Wave Does NOT require a medium to travel. (ex. radio waves phone signals)- can travel through space!
Frequency How many waves pass by in a specific amount of time. Measured in Hetz (Hz)
