Flashcards of a little bit of everything from each unit in the first chapeters
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| science | exploration process used to gain knowledge and predict natural occurrences |
| standard | exact quantity that people use to compare measurements |
| length | straight line distance between two points |
| density | mass per unit volume of material |
| motion | a change in an object's position relative to a reference point |
| velocity | the speed of an object in any given direction |
| coefficient friction | measure of stickiness between two surfaces |
| newton's 3rd law | every action has an equal an opposite reaction |
| Law of conservation of energy | under ordinary circumstances, energy is neither created or destroyed, energy can change form though |
| mechanical energy | sum of all kinetic energy, potential energy, and gravity potential energy of all the objects in a system |
| machine | a device that changes force or increases motion from work |
| efficiency | ratio of output to input work |
| mechanical advantage | numbers of times a machine multiplies input force |
| thermal energy | the sum of the kinetic energy and the potential energy of all the particles that make up an object |
| electroscope | a device that can detect electric charge |
| magnetic domains | groups of atoms with aligned magnetic poles |
| fission | process of splitting u-235 atoms to produce thermal energy |
| wave | undulation or disturbance that transfers energy, matter can be displaced in a wave but it returns to it original position |
| supersonic | faster that the speed of sound |
| photon | massless bundle of energy that behaves as a particle |
| gamma rays | electromagnetic waves with wavelength shorter than about 100-trillionths of a meter |
| hologram | a complete three dimensional photographic image of an object made by using lasers |
| heat of fusion | then energy required to change a substance from a solid to liquid |
| mixture | matter composed of two or more substances that can be separated by physical means |
