Purpose And Technique
Term | Definition |

Periapical | Shows whole tooth from to beyond root. Detects any unusual changes in the root and surrounding bone structures |
Bitewing | Detects decay between teeth and changes in the thickness of bone caused by gum disease. Also helps determine proper fit of a crown, bridges, or breakdown of dental fillings. |
Full Mouth Series | A full mouth x-ray is composed of a series of individual images, including a combination of bitewing and periapical. These radiographs are necessary to examine the dentition and supporting structures of the mouth. |
Occlusal | Occlusal X-rays show the roof or floor of the mouth and are used to find extra teeth, teeth that have not yet broken through the gums, jaw fractures, a cleft palate, cysts, abscesses or growths. Occlusal X-rays may also be used to find a foreign object |
Panoramic | Panoramic X-rays show a broad view of the jaws, teeth, sinuses, nose and the jaw joints. These X-rays do not find cavities but do show problems such as impacted teeth, bone abnormalities, cysts, tumours, infections and fractures. It is a 2D view. |
Cephalomeric | It studies the relationships between bony and soft tissue landmarks. It is often used in order to diagnose facial growth abnormalities prior to treatment. |
CBCT | allows dentists to evaluate the underlying bone structure, as well as the nerve pathways and surrounding soft tissues. |
