Purpose And Technique

TermDefinition
Periapical Shows whole tooth from to beyond root. Detects any unusual changes in the root and surrounding bone structures
Bitewing Detects decay between teeth and changes in the thickness of bone caused by gum disease. Also helps determine proper fit of a crown, bridges, or breakdown of dental fillings.
Full Mouth Series A full mouth x-ray is composed of a series of individual images, including a combination of bitewing and periapical. These radiographs are necessary to examine the dentition and supporting structures of the mouth.
Occlusal Occlusal X-rays show the roof or floor of the mouth and are used to find extra teeth, teeth that have not yet broken through the gums, jaw fractures, a cleft palate, cysts, abscesses or growths. Occlusal X-rays may also be used to find a foreign object
Panoramic Panoramic X-rays show a broad view of the jaws, teeth, sinuses, nose and the jaw joints. These X-rays do not find cavities but do show problems such as impacted teeth, bone abnormalities, cysts, tumours, infections and fractures. It is a 2D view.
Cephalomeric It studies the relationships between bony and soft tissue landmarks. It is often used in order to diagnose facial growth abnormalities prior to treatment.
CBCT allows dentists to evaluate the underlying bone structure, as well as the nerve pathways and surrounding soft tissues.
