| Term | Definition |

| 1st line of defense | Mucous Membrane and Skin |
| 2nd line of defense | Inflammatory response that includes macrophages. |
| 3rd line of defense | B and T cells |
| Pathogens | Bacteria, viruses, infectious protists, etc. that cause diseases. |
| Skin | Physical barrier with helpful microbes, part of the first line of defense. |
| Nonspecific white blood cell | Dendritic cells, neutrophils, and macrophages |
| Macrophages | Nonspecific white blood cells that engulf pathogens, part of the second line of defense. |
| Lymphocytes | Either B or T cells, part of the third line of defense. |
| Antigens | Molecules that mark pathogens, foreign substances that activate a response from B or T cells. |
| Antibiotics | Destroy bacteria by destroying cell walls, blocking production of bacteria's essential proteins, etc. |
| Antibodies | Proteins made by immune cells that fight pathogens. Often Y shaped. |
| Antivirals | Through the limitation of viral reproduction, they target viruses by making them less severe. |
| Vaccines | Expose the body to weakened or inactive forms of a virus so the body can launch a response so the body can recognize and be prepared for it. |
| Memory B/T cells | B and T cells that recognize invaders after previous exposure. |
| Mucous Membrane | Mucous secreting tissue, part of the first line of defense. |
