| inference | A conclusion a reader draws based on details in the text. Not directly stated. |
| theme | The major lesson or idea found in a text. Usually refers to fiction and poetry. |

| summary | A statement or short paragraph that tells what a text is about. |
| plot | The events that happen in a story |
| allusion | A cultural reference or reference to an outside text. |
| suspense | Building tension and uncertainty throughout a text. |
| Dramatic irony | When readers are aware of details of which the characters in a story are not. |
| connotation | The ideas or feelings that result from hearing or reading a word or phrase. |
| denotation | The dictionary definition of a word; its literal meaning. |
| tone | The authors attitude toward a subject. |
| mood | The feelings and emotions a reader has because of a text. |
| genre | The category into which a story falls. Examples include: fantasy, science fiction, realistic fiction |
| central idea | The main idea of a text |
| supporting details | The examples and evidence used to develop a central idea |
| anecdote | A smaller story within a larger story used to develop a central idea |
| point of view | The perspective from which a story is told. |
| author's purpose | The reason an author wrote a text (persuade, inform, entertain) |
| medium | The form of a text |
| coherent | Makes logical sense, fits together correctly. |
| trace | Follow the development of an argument or story through a text. |
| evaluate | Assess the strengths and weaknesses of an argument or text |
| claim | An opinion or thesis |
| compare | To find similarities between two or more topics, ideas, or concepts |
| contrast | To find the differences between two or more topics, ideas, or concepts |
