Thyroid Hormones
Thyroxine Tx (chronic): Hypothyroidism; Side effects: nervousness, insomnia, cardiovascular problems; Drug Interactions: Sympathomimetics, Anticoagulants
Triiodothyronine Tx: Myxedemic coma; not for chronic use
Thioureylenes: Propylthiouracil (PTU), Methimazole (MMI) Tx: Hyperthyroidism; inhibit thyroperoxidase iodination and coupling; orally active; side effects include skin rash, agranulocytosis
Iodide Tx Clinical uses: pre-op prep for thyroidectomy, with radioiodine to hasten recovery, management of thyroid storm, protection of thyroid after accidental exposure to radioactive iodide, tx of endemic goitre
Management of Thyroid Storm propanolol, iodide (short-term), thioreylene (long-term)
