Gen Science - Ch 20 Work and Simple Machines

| work | when a force causes an object to move in the same direction that the force is applied |
| power | how quickly work is done |
| input force | the force you apply on a machine |
| output force | the force that the machine applies |
| mechanical advantage | the number of times a machine increases the input force |
| efficiency | the ratio of the output work to the input work |
| simple machine | does work with only one movement |
| compound machine | a machine made up of a combination of simple machines |
| inclined plane | a flat, sloped surface |
| wedge | an inclined plane that moves |
| screw | an inclined plane wrapped around a cylinder or post |
| lever | any rigid rod or plank that pivots, or rotates, about a point |
| wheel and axle | consists of two circular objects of different sizes that are attached in such a way that y rotate together |
| pulley | consists of a grooved wheel with a rope or cable wrapped over it |
| force | push or pull that one body exerts on another |
| potential energy | the energy that is stored in an object due to its position or configuration |
| kinetic energy | the energy that an object possesses due to its motion |
