| encoding | the conversion of a sensory input into a form capable of being processed and deposited in memory. |
| retrieval | the ability to access information when you need it. |
| sensory memory | the perception of sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch information entering through the sensory cortices of the brain and relaying through the thalamus |
| short term memory | the concept involving the extremely limited number of items that humans are capable of keeping in mind at one time. |
| long term memory | the storage of information over an extended period |
| explicit memory | the conscious recollection of a previous episode, as in recall or recognition. |
| storage | the state of an item that is retained in memory, after encoding and before retrieval |
