| couplet | a rhymed pair of lines, may be written in any form |
| imagery | consists of words or phrases that appeal to a reader’s five senses |
| line | the core unit of a poem, similar to a sentence |
| lyric poetry | poetry that presents the personal thoughts and feelings of a single speaker |
| narrative poetry | poetry that tells a story, contains characters, setting, and a plot. |
| poetry | type of literature in which words are carefully chosen and arranged to create certain effects |
| repetition | technique in which a sound, word, phrase, or line is repeated for emphasis or unity |
| rhythm | the musical quality created by the alternation of stressed and unstressed syllables in a line of poetry |
| speaker | the voice that “talks” to the reader, similar to a narrator in fiction |
| stanza | a group of two or more lines that form a unit in a poem |
