QuestionAnswer
What is a wave? A disturbance that carries energy through matter or space.
What is a medium? Give 3 examples. What a wave travels through. Ex. Water, air, Earth's crust
What is a crest? The highest points of a transverse wave.
What is a trough? The lowest points of a transverse wave.
What is a wavelength? The distance form one crest to the next crest, or from one trough to the next trough. The shorter the wave length= the higher the energy.
What is a amplitude? The greatest distance that particles are displaced from their normal resting positions. Lower the amplitude=lower the energy. Units are meters.
What is a period? The time it takes a complete cycle or wave oscillation to occur. Units are seconds.
What is a frequency? The number of wavelengths that pass a point in a given time interval. Units are hertz (hz).
What is a mechanical wave? A wave that requires a medium to travel through (ex. sound). Has 2 types of waves.
What is a electromagnetic wave? A wave that doesn't require a medium to travel through (ex. gamma waves, x-rays, and radio waves). All electromagnetic waves are transverse.
What is a transverse wave? Waves that travel perpendicular to the matter.
What is a longitudinal wave? Waves that travel parallel to the matter.
What are some examples of transverse waves? Ripples in a pond or a slinky.
What are some examples of longitudinal waves? Clapping, seismic waves, or vibrations of a window after a storm.
The speed of waves depends on the _________, in which the sound travels. Medium
Radio waves are _________ waves because they are made up of changing electric and magnetic fields. Electromagnetic
Through which of the following materials does a sound wave travel through the slowest? A. Wood B. Air C. Steel D. Water Steel
How fast do radio waves travel? 300,000 km/s
When you ride a bicycle, what part of the bicycle transmits vibrations? A. Handle bars B. The tires C. The wheel rims D. All of the above D. All of the above
In bicycles, which of the following materials absorbs shock better than traditional steel and aluminum? A. Plastic B. Titanium C. Cardboard D. Iron
Radio waves travel at the speed of _______. Light
Of the following items commonly found in homes, which is an example of something that produces electromagnetic waves? A. A chair B. A couch C. A microwave D. A dog C. A microwave
What does a radio wave carry through space? Energy
How do you keep sound from bouncing around a room?
A(n) __________ is defined as a wave that requires a medium. Mechanical wave
A wave that causes the particles of the medium to vibrate parallel to the direction the wave travels is called a(n) ________. Longitudinal
The highest point of a wave is called the _______. Crest
The _________ is the greatest distance that particles in a medium

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
