Figurative Language

| allusion | a reference to a person, place, or event from literature, sports, history, movies, or the arts |
| hyperbole | an exaggeration that can not be possible true |
| figurative language | language that’s intended to create an image in the mind of the listener or reader that goes beyond the literal meaning |
| idiom | group of words whose collective meaning is quite different from their individual literal meaning |
| onomatopeia | words whose sounds suggest their meaning |
| personification | giving human qualities to nonhuman things |
| metaphor | a comparison of two unlike things not using the words "like" or "as" |
| simile | a comparison of two unlike things using the words "like" or "as" |
| irony | the opposite of what is meant |
