Energy Unit 21-22
Energy Unit Vocabulary Words
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| energy | the ability to do work |
| potential energy | stored energy |
| kinetic energy | energy of motion |
| law of conservation of energy | energy cannot be created or destroyed |
| mechanical energy | energy of motion that we can see with our eyes (form of kinetic energy) |
| electrical energy | energy caused by the movement of electrons (form of kinetic energy) |
| thermal energy | energy caused by the motion of atoms and molecules (also known as heat energy and is a form of kinetic energy) |
| radiant energy | energy carried by an electromagnetic wave. Light is the most common example (form of kinetic energy). |
| sound energy | energy caused by an objects vibrations of atoms (form of kinetic energy) |
| gravitational energy | potential energy that depends on the height of an object |
| elastic energy | potential energy that is stored when an object's shape is changed |
| chemical energy | potential energy that is stored in chemical bonds between atoms |
| nuclear energy | potential energy stored in the nucleus of an atom |
| turbine | A device with blades that can be turned by water, wind, or steam. This is the mechanical energy that a generator converts to electricity. |
| generator | A machine that converts mechanical energy from the turbine into electrical energy. |
| fossil fuels | Coal, oil (petroleum), natural gas, propane and other fuels that are ancient remains of plants and animals. These are primary energy sources that we burn to get our energy. |
| geothermal energy | the energy produced by heat within the earth |
| hydroelectric energy | energy generated from moving water |
| wind energy | energy obtained by harnessing the energy of the wind |
| solar energy | energy from the sun that is converted into thermal or electrical energy |
| biomass energy | energy produced by burning things that were once living, such as wood and scraps of crops. |
