Matter and Forces

QuestionAnswer
matter Anything that has mass and volume
temperature a measure of the energy of motion of the particles in matter
liquid a substance that has a definite volume but does not have a definite shape. The particles flow past each other.
volume the amount of space an object occupies on Earth
solid a substance with a definite shape and volume. The particles are tightly packed together.
gas a substance that does not have a definite shape or volume. The particles move fast and freely.
physical change a change in matter that does not affect the particles that make it up
chemical change a change in matter that results in a different substance forming because of the particles have changed
reaction the process in which different substances are formed during a chemical change
conservation of mass During physical and chemical changes, the total mass of the matter before and after the changes remains the same
mixture a combination of two or more substances that keep their identities
solution a mixture that has the same composition throughout
force a push or pull
friction a force that opposes motion and slows objects down
unbalanced forces forces that cause a change in motion
gravity a force of attraction between two objects
balanced forces forces on an object that are equal in size and opposite in direction. They cancel each other out.
mass the number of particles that make an object up
density the number of particles that make an object up divided by the amount of space that it occupies
condense when the molecules of a gas lose energy and slow down changing back to a liquid
freeze when the molecules of a liquid lose energy and slow down changing to a solid
melt when the molecules of a solid gain energy and speed up changing to a liquid
evaporate when the molecules on the surface of a liquid gain enough energy to change to a gas.
boil when the molecules throughout a liquid gain enough energy to change to a gas

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
