KAL Chemical Reactions
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| chemical reaction | process that produces chemical change |
| indicators of chemical change | bubbling (gas formation),change in color or smell, formation of precipate, energy absorption or release |
| exergonic reaction | reaction where energy is released in the form of heat, sound, electricity, or light |
| endergonic reaction | reaction where energy is absorbed in the form of heat, sound, electricity, or light |
| exothermic reaction | reaction where energy is released in the form of thermal energy (heat) |
| endothermic reaction | reaction where energy is absorbed in the form of thermal energy (heat) |
| Reactant | substance that existed before the reaction begins |
| Product | substance formed as a result of a reaction |
| Chemical equation | tells at a glance the reactants, poducts, and proportions of each present. Can also tell physical state of each substance |
| abbreviations for states of matter shown in a raection | solid -(s); liquid-(l); gas-(g); aqueous solution-(aq) |
| Relate chemical reactions to conservation of mass | mass of products must be the same as mass of the reactants in a chemical reaction |
| How do you balance a chemical equation? | Number of atoms of each element must be the same on both sides. To balance use coefficients. Coefficients apply to each element in a compound Never change the subscripts!! |
| Activation energy | minimum amount of energy needed to start a chemical reaction |
| Rate of reaction | tells how fast a reaction occurs after it is started |
| How do you find the rate of reaction? | measure how quickly one of the reactants is consumed or how quickly one of the products is created |
| Factors that affect the rate of reaction | Temperature-increase T increase rateConcentration-increase Conc. increase ratesurface area-increase surface area increase rate |
| inhibitor | substance that slows done a reaction. BHT a presrvative is an example |
| catalyst | substance that speeds up a reaction |
| enzyme | a catalyst; large protein molecules that speed up raections needed for cells to work properly |
| What are the four basic types of reactions? | synthesis, decomposition, single displacement, and double displacement |
| What reaction type is A + B--- AB? | synthesis |
| What reaction type is AB --- A + B? | decomposition |
| What reaction type is AB + C ---AC + B? | single displacement |
| What reaction type is AB + CD ---AD + CB? | double dispalcement |
