Climate Change Glossary for test

TermDefinition
Climate Change A change in the average climate conditions in a region over a long period of time.
Greenhouse Gases Includes carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, and CFCs.
Carbon Dioxide The most common greenhouse gas. It is a by-product of oil and gas production. It currently contributes around 75% of Australia’s greenhouse gas emissions.
Greenhouse Effect Natural greenhouse gases in the earth’s atmosphere allow rays from the sun to warm the earth’s surface, they also prevent heat escaping from the earth’s atmosphere.
Enhanced Greenhouse Effect Human actions increase the amount of greenhouse gas in the atmosphere therefore contributing to climate change.
Fossil Fuels These include oil, coal, and natural gas. They are made from decomposing plants and animals, once they are used they will not be replaced.
Climate Change Mitigation Efforts to reduce or prevent emission of greenhouse gases.
Sustainability The practice of using natural resources responsibly, so the future and present generations are supported.
Climate Change Adaptation Actions to help communities adjust to climate change.
Carbon Dioxide Production Cement production, burning of coal.
Nitrous Oxide Production Waste-waters, agriculture.
Methane Production Oil and gas, cow burps :d.
CFC Production Aerosols, air conditioners.
