Chapter 8 Safety in the Workplace

Barrier precautions: Measures taken to minimize the risk of exposure to blood and body fluids.
Biohazard symbol: An image or object that serves as an alert that there is a risk to organisms, such as ionizing radiation or harmful bacteria or viruses.
Carcinogenic: A substance that causes cancer.
Caustic: A substance that eats away at something.
Ergonomic: The science of designing equipment to maximize productivity by lessening the discomfort and fatigue of employees.
Exposure control plan: A written procedure for the treatment of persons exposed to biohazardous or similar chemically harmful materials.
Fire safety and emergency plan: A written procedure that includes fire extinguisher locations, fire alarm pull-box locations, sprinkler system location, exit signs, and clear directions to the quickest and safest exit of a building during an emergency.
Hazard communication plan: Application of warning labels for all hazardous chemicals.
Safety data sheet (SDS): Written or printed material concerning a hazardous chemical that includes information on the chemical’s identity and physical and chemical characteristics.
Teratogenic: A substance that causes developmental malformation to an embryo or fetus.
Universal precautions: A set of guidelines for infection control.
Blood Borne Pathogens Standard: Is used to reduce cases of HIV and HBV infections among employees.
PPE stands for: Personal Protective Equipment.
