GS Ch 18 Motion & Momentum Vocabulary
Term | Definition |
---|---|
speed | the distance traveled divided by the time taken to travel the distance. |
average speed | total distance traveled divided by the total time taken |
instantaneous speed | speed of an object at one instant of time |
velocity | the speed of the object and the direction of its motion |
motion | change in position |
change in position | requires a point of reference |
distance | the length of the route you will travel |
displacement | distance between the starting and ending points and the direction in which was traveled |
acceleration | the change in velocity divided by the time it takes for the change to occur. |
mass | the amount of matter in an object |
inertia | the tendency of an object to resist a change in its motion |
momentum | a measure of how hard it is to stop the object |
law of conservation of momentum | total momentum of objects that collide is the same before and after the collision |
scalar quantity | quantities that are fully described by a magnitude (or numerical value) alone. |
vector quantity | quantities that are fully described by both a magnitude and a direction |
