| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| speed | the distance traveled divided by the time taken to travel the distance. |
| average speed | total distance traveled divided by the total time taken |
| instantaneous speed | speed of an object at one instant of time |
| velocity | the speed of the object and the direction of its motion |
| motion | change in position |
| change in position | requires a point of reference |
| distance | the length of the route you will travel |
| displacement | distance between the starting and ending points and the direction in which was traveled |
| acceleration | the change in velocity divided by the time it takes for the change to occur. |
| mass | the amount of matter in an object |
| inertia | the tendency of an object to resist a change in its motion |
| momentum | a measure of how hard it is to stop the object |
| law of conservation of momentum | total momentum of objects that collide is the same before and after the collision |
| scalar quantity | quantities that are fully described by a magnitude (or numerical value) alone. |
| vector quantity | quantities that are fully described by both a magnitude and a direction |
