Chapter 25 Respiratory System Pharmacy Tech.

Antihistamines: Drugs that counteract the action of histamine. (Allergic reaction).
Antitussives: Agents that relieve or prevent coughing.
Barrel chest: A large, rounded thorax, as in the inspiratory phase, considered normal in some stocky individuals and certain others who live in high-altitude areas. Barrel chest may also be a sign of pulmonary emphysema.
Bronchioles: Structures in the lungs formed by the smallest bronchi.
Bronchodilators: Agents that relax the smooth muscle of the bronchial tubes.
Dry powder inhaler (DPI): A device used to deliver medication in the form of micronized powder into the lungs.
Emphysema: A chronic pulmonary disease characterized by loss of elasticity of the lung tissue often caused by exposure to toxic chemicals and cigarette smoke.
Exhalation: The act of exhaling, which is breathing out; also called expiration.
Inhalation: The act of inhaling, which is breathing in; also called inspiration.
Larynx: Commonly known as the voice box, it is hard, rigid, and composed of cartilage.
Metered dose inhaler (MDI): A handheld pressurized device used to deliver medications for inhalation.
Ventilation: The act of ventilating, which is to breathe in and out.
External respiration: Exchange of gases between the lungs and blood.
Internal respiration: Exchange of gases between the blood and body cells.
