High School Vocabulary
Term | Definition | Sentence |
---|---|---|
Credit | What a student earns for completing/passing a class. Students receive 1 credit for a course that lasts all year, 1/2 credit for a semester long class. | You get one credit for most of your classes. |
Course | Another word for a class. | You take 7 courses starting in middle school. |
Diploma | Certificate that represents completion of a program of study. | You will get a diploma once you graduate high school. |
Elective | A course that is not required but can be chosen by students if they are interested in the class. | You can choose electives like a sport, art, or band. |
Graduation Requirements | Standards that must be met in order to receive a diploma. | You must reach graduation requirements in order to graduate. |
Advanced Placement Classes | Accelerated and more challenging classes. | Most people take advanced placement classes in high school. |
Freshmen | 9th grade year... how you are classified in high school. | You will be a freshmen when you first enter high school. |
Sophomore | 10th grade year. | You'll be a sophomore in your 2nd year of high school. |
Junior | 11th grade year. | You'll be a junior your 3rd year of high school. |
Senior | 12th grade year. | My brother is a senior this year. |
Prerequisite | A course that is required before another course can be taken. | You must take a prerequisite before you can take an elective. |
Smart Core | Arkansas's college and career ready curriculum for high school students. | Smart core can help you get into great colleges. |
GPA | Grading system that averages your grades to determine how well you performed in all your classes. | Some schools require you to have a 3.0 GPA in order to graduate. |
Transcript | Complete representation of a students academic record. | Your principle has a transcript of all of your grades. |
