Waves Science
SPS9a,b,c,d,e vocab
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Medium | any form of matter whose particles transport the wave's energy |
Wave | a disturbance caused by the mechanical motion of a particle |
Propagate | travel by the physical motion of particles |
Sound wave | a form of a mechanical wave |
Electromagnetic waves | waves that can travel through a vacuum |
Mechanical waves | waves that require a medium |
Vacuum | empty space |
Transverse wave | a wave that oscillates in the direction that is perpendicular to it's movement |
Longitudinal wave | a wave that oscillates in the direction that is parallel to it's movement |
Amplitude | the maximum displacement of a wave particle from the midpoint between the crest and the trough |
period | the amount of time for one cycle of motion to complete |
Wavelength | the distance between two crests |
Hertz | the peak of one cycle per second |
Frequency | The number of wavelengths that occur in a time |
the velocity formula | Frequency*Wavelength |
the symbol for wavelength? | Lambda (λ) |
Reflection is | when waves bounce off of a surface |
an example of reflection? | Waves bounce from the mirror into your eyes when you look into it |
If a wave is only partially reflected what happens to the leftover energy | absorbed |
When waves travel through matter | Transmitted |
Reflection | waves bounce off the surface at the same angle it hit it |
Transmission | travels through the material at the same angle it entered |
Refraction | travels through the material, but now at a different angle |
Diffraction | travels through the material until an obstacle is encountered. The proceeds to BEND around the object and pass. |
Absorption | does not travel all the way through the material. |
Interference | Wave come from 2 sources and meet. They then affect each other in different ways. |
Law of Reflection | States that the angle of reflection equals the angle of incidence |
Angle of Incidence | Angle of which light hits the surface |
Angle of Reflection | Angle that the light bounces off the surface |
Refraction does what based on the density of the medium | It bends the wave |
What is Snells Law | n1sinθ1=n2sinθ2 |
What is Visible Light | Light that humans can see with the naked eye |
